Smart meters (and I’ll throw in automated demand response systems here as well) are foundational technologies that a Utility must invest in if they are to realise their digital aspirations.
Consumers are adopting digital technologies such as rooftop solar, distributed energy storage, and electric vehicles at an ever increasing rate. We are also at the beginning of what I believe will be a hockey stick journey to connected homes.
Can utilities afford to continue debating the value of smart metering and demand response technologies (remaining analog) while the rest of the world goes digital?
